Al’chemy Hair Trio

A couple of days ago i heard a girl in my makeup class jokingly comment that because she’d run out of shampoo she used detergent to wash her hair. We all laughed at the idea but then the hairdressing teacher next door chipped in and added that supermarket shampoos are practically glamorized versions of household detergent, so washing hair with a household cleaning liquid wouldn’t be anymore damaging. Now, I knew that supermarket haircare products aren’t the best option for hair, but hearing that those products are on par with something I clean dirty dishes with, shocked me into buying some organic natural hair items.

When I first started veganising my beauty products, I quickly realized that vegan/natural/organic products are expensive. Luckily I’m not one to impulse buy, so I did a little hunting and found that there are some reasonably priced products on the market. One that I recently purchased was Alchemy haircare.

Al’chemy products are Australian made, cruelty free and derived from plant-based ingredients.  Being vegan and free from sulfates, parabens and silicon’s, these products take a little getting used to.

Chemically based hair care products contain ingredients that coat the hair to give a smooth texture. Al’chemy ditches these chemical fillers, so when i washed my hair I was shocked at how clean my hair became. All oil from my scalp and hair was stripped off to leave some seriously dry locks.

Slightly panicked, I hurriedly squeezed on some Macadamia and Wheat Protein conditioner on my hands and thoroughly massaged it into my hair. Being slightly thicker in texture, a little effort is required to evenly coat the hair. This also means that I use slightly more conditioner and apply it very close to my scalp to hydrate my hair.

I would never normally apply condition anywhere near my scalp because my hair produces enough oil to run my car, but my hair is less oily with this shampoo and conditioner combination. This actually makes perfect sense, because the body doesn’t need to produce more oil when the scalp is well moisturised, so I can wash my hair every second day without any problem.

Leave in conditioner is a product I rarely go out and buy, but this Lavender and Anthyllis one is incredibly nourishing for dry damaged hair. It can be used on damp or dry hair (I use it on damp hair as it spreads easily) and its lavender scent is a pleasant addition. Also only a teeny, tiny drop (for short hair) is needed to add ample shine and hydration, so the product will last  a while.

I bought this trio in a pack from a little store called Auroma in Fitzroy. Auroma stocks a range of oils, soaps, raw butters, lotions, fragrances and a few ready-made products, so it’s the place to go to find ingredients for DIY beauty treatments!
